Early Childhood Programs
The Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten years are devoted to nurturing the imaginative and social development of the young child. These are the years when a child learns primarily through imitation and creative play. The pre-kindergarten/ kindergarten bridges the transition from home life to school. The classroom is a pleasing and inviting environment of warm colors, natural materials, simple, handcrafted toys, and objects from nature. The daily and seasonal rhythms, which are so comforting to young children, include such activities as songs, storytelling, painting, baking, nature walks, and time for creative play.

Cedarwood has traditional mixed-age kindergartens, in which the children's ages range from four to six years. We also have pre-kindergarten for children ages three to five. Programs range from two to five days a week.

Grades Program
Academic work begins in first grade, when the child is developmentally ready to begin the journey out of the magical realm of early childhood. The grades curriculum is presented in an imaginative and personal way that seeks to meet the children's growing capacities physically, emotionally, spiritually, and academically.

Cedarwood's grade school includes the full Waldorf curriculum of traditional academic subjects as well as music, eurythmy, handwork, games, and two foreign languages- Spanish and Japanese.

Cedarwood does not issue grades or administer standardized tests. Children's progress, however, is constantly monitored. Parent- teacher conferences are scheduled several times throughout the year. Teachers write lengthy reports about each student at year end.

Aftercare
The pre-kindergarten/kindergarten and grades aftercare program is designed for children to relax, create, play and socialize with classmates while their parents work or take care of family matters.

Activities
As an extension of the day, aftercare is an out breath (down time). Children can choose to engage in arts and crafts, board games, dress-up, reading or just socializing with friends. There is also time for active play outdoors or in the gym. A simple, nutritious snack will be provided daily and parents are also encouraged to pack extra food on those days when their child attends aftercare.

Hours
Aftercare is provided from class dismissal until 5:45p.m. (Dismissal is 12:45p.m. for pre-kindergarten/kindergarten, 1:30p.m for first grade and 3:00p.m for the rest of the grades classes.) If parents are late for dismissal pick-up, their child will remain in the classroom for 15 minutes and then they will be escorted to aftercare by the teacher. Please call the school to notify us when you are going to be late.

Calendar
Aftercare is provided Monday through Friday when school is in session, and during teacher in-service days with scheduling as needed. For school vacation periods, child care will be assessed if enough families require it.

Drop-in
Drop-in Childcare is provided only in the event of family emergency-- illness, accident, transportation issues. Please notify the school and aftercare, providing some idea of when you or someone else will be picking up your child. We understand that some families' work life or further education schedule can conflict with signing your child up in advance. If this is the case, please speak to your aftercare provider before signing up to see if there is space or if a space can be held for your child.

Sign-up
Monthly sign-up calendars are placed beside boxes. Scheduling and payment occur one month in advance. Schedules and payment should be placed in the designated aftercare file by the deadline date. Timely scheduling and payment will insure that your child-care needs are covered. The maximum number of children in the grades program will be 15 at any one time, so it is important that parents schedule ahead of time so activities can be planned accordingly. This is especially important for snack time! If you are doing volunteer work at the school or need to schedule a conference with a teacher you may also sign up your child for aftercare.

Fees
The hourly rate (with sibling discount) is to be paid in advance when you turn in your sign-up schedule. There is a separate, higher fee for drop-in care. A credit will be given for unused time if your child is absent. A materials fee will be charged at the beginning of the school year for each child who will be attending aftercare on a regular basis. (Please note that the bookkeeper, and not the caregiver, oversees the financial aspects of aftercare.)

Safety
Security and emergency plans, including phone tree, will be in place during aftercare. It is imperative that notification information, including two backup contacts, medical waivers and food allergy precautions be on file in the office before your child attends aftercare.

Communication
You are welcome to set up a time with the aftercare caregiver to discuss issues concerning the program or your child, to discuss ideas, give suggestions and feedback. The number of the aftercare program is (503) 295-0796.
