Paper Plate Weaving Art

With a few supplies found around the house, or at a local store, your budding artist can get creative with just a little bit of assistance. This craft works fine motor skills, as well as hand-eye coordination.

There are a few different ways you can make these lovely weaving crafts. Tracing a cookie cutter on a paper plate, cutting out the design, and hole punching around the shape for the sewing holes is one way.

Another method is to trace the cookie cutter but use a metal yarn needle to punch holes around the shape and sew with those guides. Either method produces beautiful art!

A few links at the bottom with video tutorials.

Supplies:

  • Paper plate or similar

  • Single-hole puncher or a metal yarn needle

  • Cookie cutter shape (a heart is used in this example)

  • String

Directions:

  1. Using a cookie cutter of choice, trace a shape onto the wrong side of the plate. Cut the traced shape out of the plate.

  2. Take a hole punch, or metal sewing needle, and punch holes around the shape for sewing.

  3. Cut and thread the needle with yarn. Make sure to have enough yarn to sew back and forth around your shape. If you’re not using a sewing needle, wrap some tape around the end of the yarn to make threading the design easier.

  4. Tape the end of the yarn to the back of the plate.

  5. With the threaded needle, stitch a pattern from one side of the drawn shape to the other. Work in this manner all around shape. When complete, thread to the back of the plate and tape off.

If you'd like to add some extra color to your artwork, you can pre-paint or color the paper plate before weaving. Happy crafting!
