Middle School

Grades 6–8

Middle School

Our program is designed to support and guide our students through the challenges emerging teens face, as they develop their capacity for critical thinking and prepare to leave Cedarwood as curious digital citizens, scientists, artists, mathematicians, musicians, and writers, ready for the next step in their academic journey. We utilize a team teaching format in the middle school, in which students are held by their class teacher and supported by a number of speciality subject teachers.

List of 3 items.

  • Sixth Grade

Sixth grade is a year of structure, organization, and growing independence. As students enter adolescence, they benefit from clear expectations and dependable routines while developing the study habits and organizational skills needed for increasingly complex work. Their growing interest in how the world works is reflected in a curriculum that explores cause and effect, the laws of the natural world, and the enduring structures of civilizations such as Ancient Rome.
  • Seventh Grade

Seventh grade is a year of reflection, imagination, and self-discovery. As students become more aware of themselves and their relationships with others, they are drawn to questions of identity, beauty, and human experience. In science, they begin their first sustained encounters with the hard sciences—chemistry and physics. Alongside rich opportunities for creative expression through writing, poetry, history, and the arts, students continue to explore both the world around them and their own emerging perspectives.
  • Eighth Grade

Eighth grade is a year of purpose, leadership, and transformation. Students are eager to question assumptions, engage with big ideas, and imagine how they can shape the future. Through the study of revolutions, modern history, science, and their own culminating class projects, they develop the confidence, responsibility, and vision to lead, serve, and take the next step into high school.

High School Placement

Graduation & Beyond

At Cedarwood, we keep the long view in mind. We strive to prepare students for lives of purpose, curiosity, and meaningful contribution. We recognize that a successful transition to high school is an important milestone on that path, and we work closely with families to help each student find the school where they will continue to grow and thrive.

Preparing for High School

Many Paths, One Strong Foundation

Cedarwood graduates attend a wide range of public, private, and charter high schools throughout the Portland area. Because our students come from many neighborhoods and each brings unique strengths, interests, and aspirations, there is no single path after eighth grade. Instead, we help each family find the high school where their child will continue to be challenged, supported, and inspired.
In the past five years, Cedarwood students have matriculated to the following high schools:
