As is the tradition at Cedarwood, these students have been working hard since the spring of 2023 to research, study, design, build, and create a plethora of amazing projects.

We are so proud to share their thoughtful work here, and invite you to watch their project presentations below.

2024 8th Grade Projects

Amalie: Video Games

Amalie’s project is learning the history and effects of video games, and creating a prototype of a video game. Amalie would like to thank Patrick Wren, a video game developer for their mentorship.


Ashiri: Particle Serenade

Ashiri project is “Particle Serenade” and where she created a working model in which magnetic materials respond to music. Ashiri would like to thank Amit and RInkle Jain (Electrical Engineers) and Marco Beltman (acoustics) for their mentorship.


Augusta: Climate Change and Extinction

Augusta researched the history of extinction and how humans are creating the 6th great extinction and climate change and has created a painting of then vs now showing how humans are cutting down trees and polluting the air. Augusta would like to thank Ansley Samson, an environmental lawyer for their mentorship.


Brewster: Architecture and the Carbon Footprint in Construction

Brewster researched the carbon footprint in construction and has designed a house as the project. Brewster would like to thank Travis Bell, a professor at Portland State University for their mentorship.


Clyde: Supervolcanoes

Clyde researched volcanos for their project, as well as created an erupting volcano. Clyde would like to thank Bruce, a geologist, for their mentorship.


Emmett: The Future and History of Basketball 

Emmett researched the history and future of basketball, where they interviewed three different people about their perspectives on basketball and its evolution. Emmett would like to thank Eric, who helped with technology for interviews and creating the podcast, for their mentorship.


Esmé: Bees and Plants

Esmé researched bees and plants, and created a little pollinator garden, both in a plot and in a pot. Esmé would like to thank Holly Bell, professional plant person, for their mentorship through their project.


Felix: Evolution of Cephalopods

Felix researched the evolution of cephalopods, while creating a model of a vampire squid. Felix would like to thank George I. Matsumoto and Danna Staaf for their mentorship.


Freya: Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design

Freya’s researched focused on why we should consider a sustainable approach in the craft of metalsmithing, while creating a collection of handmade jewelry pieces including bracelets, earrings, rings and mirror frame from a variety of metals. Freya would like to thank Dixie Pannu, Metals artist and teacher, for their mentorship.


Gray: Competing with Type one Diabetes

Gray researched how to compete in sports with type 1 Diabetes, while creating resin sports balls. Gray would like to thank Asher Larco, College student with type 1 Diabetes for their mentorship and guidance through this project.


Hazel: Interior Design

Hazel researched the various styles of interior design, how to work with clients and research design supply stores in Portland and beyond. Hazel created mood boards for potential clients and would like to thank Jill Chan from Well Home Design PDX for their mentorship.


Julia: The Mystery of Sharks

Julia researched why we know less about sharks than other ocean species, and how what we know and don’t know about sharks has affected our portrayal of them in the media, our perception and treatment of sharks and their survival as a species, as well as creating two model sharks demonstrating key and unique features of sharks. Julia would like to thank Ms. Jessica Schulte, a PhD student at the Oregon State University Hatfield Science Center, Big Fish Lab for their mentorship.


Kai: The World's Game

Kai researched the history, background, and the industry of soccer, while creating a tabletop foosball table. Kai would like to thank Alex Barwick, group media director at Wieden+Kennedy, and an English football fan and media expert on advertising in sports for their mentorship.


Lila: Animation

Lila researched the Importance of Animation and created a tutorial video on animation. Lila would like to thank Marc Lumer for their mentorship.


Luca: Climbing: How to Build Success

Luca researched how competitive rock climbers train at a very high Level to win competitions by focusing on: 1) physical skills, 2) technique, and 3) mental fitness. Luca continued to study and apply lessons from these three areas will help newer climbers progress faster and achieve more, while chart tracking climbing training and improvements in endurance and skill over time and a video. Luca would like to thank Jerry Spokes, father and personal climbing coach for their mentorship for this project, and beyond.


Lydia: Theater & Playwriting

Lydia researched the history of western theater and its effects on society and politics, and wrote the play: “Timeless Love”. Lydia would like to thank Brandon Bednarek, writer, choreographer, producer, and director of Saw, the Musical, and Michael Weinberg, BA in Theater with a specialization in directing for their mentorship.


Maggie: Music is Medicine: Post-Pandemic Healing, Connection, and Community Through the Phenomenon That is Taylor Swift

Maggie researched how music impacts the brain, specifically about how Taylor Swift and her rise to stardom, business smarts, and global influence that she used to bring people together through her music, all while crocheting a blanked titled “Surprise Song”. Maggie would like to thank Mx. Bright, CWS Music Teacher Extraordinaire for their mentorship.


Nico: Improving Soccer

Nico researched ways to improve soccer skills through consistency, fitness, conditioning, technical training, mentality, nutrition, injury care, habit life, and use of professional modeling, culminating in the creation of a website with 18 soccer drills, workouts, and fitness programs. Nico would like to thank Alejandra, and Pepe Moscoso for their mentorship.


Orion: International Cooking

Orion researched various fermented foods, and their many health benefits, and created a cookbook including the dishes my mentor and I made together and information on them. Orion would like to thank Donny Johnson, Chef at Biwa, a Japanese restaurant for their mentorship.


Petula: Healing Power of Art

Petula researched art therapy, art in community, and their connection to mental wellness all while crocheting community blanket for houseless individuals. Petula would like to thank Gia Davis, crochet mentor and June Ahrens, a community artist for their mentorship.


Santino: The Columbia River

Santino researched the Columbia River; the people, the fish, the fishing, the power source, and the animals. Santino designed and built a fishing rod from scratch and would like to thanks John Rickert, retired fishing guide and Fire Chief for their mentorship.


Sarai: Corsets

Sarai researched the history and evolution of corsets and how fashion affects beauty standards, all while creating an 18th-century designed corset made of 12 silk panels with steel boning. Sarai would like to thank Miriam Rooney, Fashion Designer and Artist, for their mentorship.


Simon: Calisthenics

Simon researched the accessibility of Calisthenics and build their own Parallettes (small push-up bars).


Val: Physical Health and Nutrition

Val researched the effects of exercise and food on the body and how to maintain a healthier lifestyle, all while creating a video called “Val’s Workout in Minutes Video”. Val would like to thank Coach Bill Bradley, owner of Alive MMA Gym in Woodstock, for their mentorship.


Valentina:  American Sign Language

Valentina researched language deprivation and created a video sharing a story in ASL. Valentina would like to thank Anne Marie Eagle, a teacher at Central Catholic High School, for their mentorship.


Vivienne: Whales: guardians of the sea

Vivienne researched whales for their project, and created a painting. Vivienne would like to thank Meredith Wilson for their mentorship.
