Drop-In Programs

Math Lab

Bring your passion for playing music to the Middle School Ensemble!

All Ensemble members are expected to practice in preparation for class. Performances will take place at Cedarwood, with the possibility of performing at an off-campus venue.

Join the Cedarwood Splinters in this year's Portland Parks and Rec Goldenball league!

Coach David Carr will lead inclusive weekly practices that focus on skill-building and teamwork. Games will be on weekends starting January 7 through February 25.

Both boys and girls are welcome to participate. Registration is required to play at the games.

*Starts one week earlier than our other activities due to games schedule.

Performance Space

Build a bowl, a set of tea cups, a functional lantern, your favorite mythical creature!

Working in clay builds flexible thinking, while grounding emotions -- perfect for our budding middle schoolers!

Ms. Maruska will lead students in creating both functional and fantastical works, focusing both on the balance of letting go of control and zeroing in on details.

*Class is limited to 15 students.

Join classmates in vigorous weekly basketball skills practices with Coach David Carr.

Students will practice passing, guarding, and shooting all while building team spirit!

This skills class will support both boys and girls of all ability levels in physical fitness, self-acceptance, and perseverance.

GirlStrength (Grades 6-8)

GirlStrength is an empowerment-based self-defense, assertiveness, and confidence-building class for girls.

Through hands-on activities and discussions, topics such as staying safe in public, trusting and using intuition, markers of healthy relationships, saying no and setting boundaries, gendered violence, and, of course, self-defense strikes and escapes will be covered.

Girls will get to practice using their voices, escape strategies, and physical skills to keep themselves safe in potentially dangerous situations -- and have fun while doing it!

*This is a free program offered through Portland Police. Donations are appreciated, and will go directly to the program.

BoyStrength aims to foster an understanding of what it means to be a young man in today's media-driven society by boosting knowledge and awareness of equity, diversity, and cultural differences, while supporting boundary setting and introducing bystander intervention and violence de-escalation techniques.

Through hands-on activities and discussions, boys will develop their capacity to express and regulate emotions and enhance their inner strength, leadership, and mentoring skills.

*This is a free program offered through Portland Police. Donations are appreciated, and will go directly to the program.

Marimba (Grades 6-8)

Enliven our school with the joyful, uplifting, and melodic percussive sounds of the marimba this spring!

Mr. Hayes and MyLinda King, from Boka Marimba, will be leading this beginning class on a beautiful new set of instruments on loan to our school. During the winter term, students in Grades 6-8 will explore the polyrhythmic music of the Shona and Ndebele people of Zimbabwe and South Africa.

In the spring, we will welcome Grade 5 students to the music-making circle!

Circus Arts (Grades 2-8)

Instructor: Ms. Pearl, with support from Tyler Puterbaugh of Northwest Parkour

Cost: $150

The circus challenges each student to develop a sense of balance, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and an ability to concentrate. Students will learn to work together and support each other, while also challenging themselves to learn new skills that take practice and determination to master.

Led by Ms. Pearl, with support from Tyler Puterbaugh of Parkour Northwest, this class offers children the opportunity to learn a wide range of circus skills, such as stilts, rolling globe, unicycle, rola bola, plate spinning, acrobatics, and diablo. Students will also be introduced to theatrical expression, clowning, and creative movement.

This is a great introductory and intermediate circus skills experience for all students!

Explore culture through the lens of food!

Two 4-week sessions for students in Grades 3-5 will offer students delicious experiences preparing specialities from the homeland of teacher Silvia Santana. Students learn kitchen safety and food resourcefulness, while cooking, writing recipes, and sharing authentic Mexican meals.

*Class is limited to 10 students per session

Kindness Warrior Project (Grades 6-8)

This 8-week course is designed to help middle schoolers develop self-awareness, emotional resilience, self-compassion, and connection in order to lead engaged and meaningful lives.

At a time when teens struggle with anxiety, depression, disconnection, and isolation, mindfulness and self-compassion offer a positive alternative to modern-day coping mechanisms.

Through developmentally appropriate activities and meditations, teens will learn specific tools to help support and navigate life with greater ease.

Homework Pop-Up (Grades 5-8)

Okay, okay, who wants to do homework on a Friday?!

But imagine it like this: we settle in with a bowl of popcorn, one of Ms. Maruska's infamous creative problem-solving games, and tackle the task of homework before the weekend even begins!

This is a quiet work zone for students looking for a little extra teacher support with tracking assignments, editing work, and answering questions. Students will build confidence as they ask questions, dig for answers, and check things off their to-do list!
